Who We Are
Our Story
Lakou Lokal was founded in 2024 as a response to the needs of Haitian immigrant families seeking culturally respectful resources. We recognized how difficult it can be for many families to maintain connection to their roots while adapting to life in a new country.
This is how our founders envisioned an online space that mirrors the traditional Haitian 'lakou'—a place where families gather, share what they have, and support one another.
From a simple vision, Lakou Lokal has become a virtual community center providing mental health resources, parenting support, cultural education, and a space for Haitian families to find recognition, education, and community love.
Our name, 'Lakou Lokal', means we bring the traditional 'lakou' concept—where all families used to gather—to our local community. We create a space where families can find help, connection, and resources that respect their culture and the realities of their lives today.
Our Mission
Lakou Lokal's mission is to create a virtual community center that provides Haitian immigrant families with access to mental health resources, parenting support, and cultural wellness education that respects their culture.
We aim to bridge the gap between traditional Haitian values and the challenges of life in a new country, so we can give our community members a sense of belonging and the capacity to move forward.
Our Vision
We envision a world where Haitian immigrant families thrive—they maintain connection to their culture, they find good mental health support, and they have tools to manage all the difficulties of life in another country.
Lakou Lokal strives to be the premier virtual gathering place where Haitian families can reunite, honor their heritage, and find innovative solutions to today's challenges.
